You Don’t Have to Be in the Same Room to Mediate

One of the biggest myths about family mediation is that both people have to sit together around a table and negotiate face-to-face.
The reality is very different.

At Family Mediation Online, many of the families we help never sit in the same room, never speak directly to one another, and in some cases never even see each other throughout the mediation process.
This is known as shuttle mediation, and it is designed specifically for situations where direct communication feels difficult, uncomfortable, or simply impossible.
What Is Shuttle Mediation?
In shuttle mediation, the mediator acts as the bridge between the parties.
Rather than meeting together, each person is placed in a separate room if the mediation is conducted in person. If the mediation takes place online, each person joins from a separate virtual room.
The mediator moves between the parties, carrying proposals, questions, concerns and ideas back and forth. The discussions remain structured, calm and productive without either person having to engage directly with the other.
Many clients are surprised to discover that mediation can be conducted successfully without any direct interaction at all.
Who Is Shuttle Mediation Suitable For?
Shuttle mediation can be particularly helpful where:
Communication has broken down completely.
There is a high level of conflict.
One or both parties feel anxious about meeting together.
There has been a history of controlling or intimidating behaviour.
Emotions remain too raw following separation.
The parties simply prefer not to be in the same room.
Whether discussions relate to child arrangements, finances, property, pensions, or wider family matters, shuttle mediation can often provide a safe and effective environment for progress to be made.
Online Shuttle Mediation
Technology has made mediation even more accessible.
Through secure video conferencing, each participant joins from their own home or chosen location. The mediator places each party into a separate virtual meeting room and moves between them throughout the session.
This means:
No travelling together.
No waiting together.
No face-to-face contact.
No direct conversations unless both parties wish to have them.
Many clients find online shuttle mediation less stressful and more convenient than attending a physical venue.
Why Mediation Works
Family mediation focuses on finding practical solutions rather than assigning blame.
Unlike court proceedings, mediation allows families to remain in control of the decisions affecting their future. The process is confidential, flexible, and usually significantly quicker and less expensive than litigation.
The mediator does not take sides or make decisions. Instead, they help both parties explore options, understand each other’s concerns, and work towards proposals that meet the needs of the family.
Agreements reached in mediation can then be recorded in documents such as a Memorandum of Understanding and, where appropriate, converted into a legally binding Consent Order through the court.
Government Funding Available
Families with children under the age of 18 may be eligible for the Government’s Family Mediation Voucher Scheme.
The scheme currently provides up to £500 towards the cost of mediation, helping families resolve disputes without the need for lengthy and expensive court proceedings.
The voucher is available regardless of income and can be used towards eligible mediation cases involving children.
The Ministry of Justice’s Commitment to Mediation
The Ministry of Justice has repeatedly recognised mediation as a highly effective form of Non-Court Dispute Resolution (NCDR).
In recent years, the Government has continued to encourage separating couples to explore mediation before turning to court proceedings. This reflects a growing recognition that families are often better placed to create lasting solutions for themselves than to have decisions imposed upon them by a judge.
For many families, mediation provides a quicker, more cost-effective, and less adversarial route to resolving disputes.
